Facts about Kidney Disease

  • Chronic Kidney Disease, commonly known as kidney (renal) failure, is not an unusual disease. More than 20 million people in the USA have some degree of kidney failure.
  • Kidney disease affects roughly 10 percent of the world’s population.
  • Unfortunately, unless it is very late in their life, this disease remains silent and the majority of the people who have this disease are NOT aware of it.
  • Even in the early stages, people who have chronic kidney disease are at much higher risk for cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks.
  • Chronic Kidney Disease, if it continues to progress, can lead to End Stage Renal Disease. At that point, people cannot survive without being on dialysis or without having kidney transplantation.
  • It is very important that kidney disease be discovered in the early stages so treatment can be started specifically to prevent the progression of the disease.
  • Some of the major risk factors for kidney disease are: Diabetes, High blood pressure, Advanced age, African-American race, Smoking and Family history.
  • There are some basic blood and urine tests available which can be done to detect kidney disease early.
  • If you have any of these risk factors, you should consult your physician about being tested for kidney disease.
