Decatur Memorial Hospital Earns Designation as National Spirit of Women Premier Hospital

Decatur Memorial Hospital Praised for Education Programs and Exceptional Outreach Efforts

April 16, 2010...Spirit of Women Health Network has selected Decatur Memorial Hospital as a Spirit of Women Premier Hospital.

The designation is based on an evaluation using the National Standards of Excellence in Women’s Health which measures clinical excellence in women’s healthcare and community outreach. The Standards were developed by Spirit of Women Health Network in educational cooperation with the Office of Women’s Health and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

“Decatur Memorial Hospital is one of a very small number of hospitals in our country that provides exceptional women-centered medical care, and as a result, is identified as a community accelerator for women’s health excellence in the United States,” said Tanya Abreu, President and National Program Director, Spirit of Women Health Network.

As part of a comprehensive evaluation process, Decatur Memorial Hospital demonstrated innovation and excellence in women’s programming across the board and earned the designation as a Premier Hospital meeting or exceeding at least 80 percent of the Standards. The National Standards of Excellence in Women’s Health require focus on women-centered care, call-to-action education, and access to care in the following seven areas:

  • Integration of a Focused Community Assessment
  • Implementation of Comprehensive Life Stage Programming
  • Sensitivity to Community Diversity and Cultural Differences
  • Strategic Alignment of Women’s Service Lines
  • Leading Innovation and Outreach Initiatives
  • Managing a Process for Quality Improvement
  • Multidisciplinary Approach to Care

“It is most rewarding to be recognized for programs that we believe have been so important for the community,” said Jenny Brandenburg, Director, Women & Children Services, Decatur Memorial Hospital. “Spirit of Women is in an ideal position to assess the range and scope of health issues facing American women today, which makes this honor particularly meaningful.”
