Bariatric Program
LapBand® Weight Loss Surgery Program
DMH Wellness Center is pleased to offer quality care for qualifying patients seeking minimally invasive LapBand® weight loss surgery. The LapBand® surgery promotes weight loss by restricting the amount of food that can be consumed as a result of a reduced capacity of the stomach.
What is LapBand?

The procedure is performed laparoscopically by Dr. Timothy Bailey and Dr. Albert Gilman IV at Decatur Memorial Hospital. An inflatable silicone band is placed into your abdomen and is fastened around the upper portion of the stomach to create a new, smaller stomach pouch that limits the amount of food you are able to consume.
Digestion is slowed; therefore, you experience an early feeling of fullness and are satisfied with smaller amounts of food.
Screening Process
The first step in getting started is to attend a free orientation session at the DMH Wellness Center. Sign up for one of these sessions by clicking
here.
You will receive an informational packet to fill out at that time. When we receive your insurance information, you can get started with the screening process:
- Initial assessment with the surgeon
- Initial assessment with the registered dietitian
- Exercise assessment and physical fitness summary with exercise physiologist
- Initial assessment with the psychologist
- LapBand nutrition class with the registered dietitian
- A monthly case conference will be held by the bariatric surgery team to discuss your plan of care
Follow-up Care
Regular follow-up is vital to the success of the weight loss surgery patient. To monitor medical care, ensure proper nutrition and fluid intake, have exercise questions answered, and resolve behavioral concerns, you will also be meeting with the surgeon, dietitian, exercise physiologist, and psychologist after you have LapBand surgery.
Wellness Center Staff
The Wellness Center staff provides nutrition and exercise care related to your weight loss surgery journey. Patients meet with a registered dietitian for education and meal planning assistance as well as an exercise physiologist for a physical fitness assessment both before and after surgery. All nutrition and exercise assessments will take place at the DMH Wellness Center.
