Hypothyroidism is a failure of the thyroid to produce an adequate amount of thyroid hormone. It may occur in both children and adults, and has a number of causes.

Symptoms:

  • Fatigue, lethargy
  • Weight gain
  • Difficulty losing weight
  • Depression
  • Feeling Cold
  • Facial Swelling and puffiness
  • Constipation

Treatment is aimed at correcting the lack of thyroid hormone. Synthetic thyroid hormone is available in many preparations, Levoxvl, Synthroid, Unithroid, and Natural thyroid extracts. These are relatively inexpensive and are generally taken daily. A thyroid specialist can adjust the dose requirement specific to your needs, based on periodic blood tests of circulating thyroid hormone and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone or thyrotropin).
