Decatur Memorial Hospital has a customized outpatient program designed to strengthen your heart and lungs to improve your health and overall quality of life. The cardiopulmonary staff of RNs, exercise physiologists and respiratory therapists offer individualized exercise training and lifestyle modification for those living with heart or lung disease.
Divided into 3 distinct phases, the program covers immediate to long-term needs. All phases of the program involve close communication with the patient’s physician and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation staff. Each phase gradually and safely guides you to recovery by monitoring physical activity and educating on risk factors, nutrition, medication and improved lifestyle.
Begins in the hospital and lays the foundation for lifestyle and behavioral changes needed for you to recuperate.
Consists of 36 outpatient telemetry monitored exercise sessions in cardiopulmonary rehab. Your program is designed for you based on your doctor’s recommendations, 6 minute walk test, vital signs and perceived exertion scale. At the end of 36 sessions, patients graduate to the next phase.
Provides long term maintenance of your heart and lung fitness through continuous training and education. Monthly checks (more often if needed) include heart rhythm, blood pressure, weight, medications and review of the patients program.

The first step toward Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation is a referral from your doctor. Orientation classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:00 pm by appointment only.
During orientation you will learn more about the program and schedule a time for your rehab to begin. Patients attending Cardiopulmonary Rehab will be issued a parking permit for designated reserved parking spaces.
Nutrition and Cardiac Risk Factors classes are offered monthly to patients, their family and the public at no cost. Please call 876-2496 for more information or to register for class.
Cardiopulmonary Wellness Group: This support group meets monthly and is open to patients, their family and the community at no cost. Monthly meetings offer information on a wide variety of interesting topics by guest speakers. Please call 876-2496 for more information or to register for class.
