Led by registered nurses to help you prepare for your baby, our childbirth classes
are grouped in sessions of two. You can come to one or both sessions:

Childbirth ExperienceL

This class addresses what to expect before, during and after childbirth; birth by c-section; pain management; and when to come to the hospital.

These classes are free and held in the Family Birth Center classroom (third floor) from 6:30—8:30 pm on the days listed here. To register, call 217-876-3400 or register online.

Caring For Your Baby Class

This class is taught by a certified lactation counselor who reviews breast feeding (pumping/storing, positioning your baby, tips for success) and newborn care in the early days and beyond.

Offered FREE, this class provides information about why breast feeding is the BEST choice for baby and mother. Fathers/support persons welcome. Class held from 6:30—8:30 pm in the OB classroom. Registration required. To register, call 217-876-3400 or register online.

E-Birth Class – Online Childbirth Class

Our online childbirth class is ideal for those expectant parents who can’t attend an on-site childbirth class due to work schedules, time constraints, or medical conditions.

The eight-chapter program is an interactive, web-based class that uses videos, personal birth stories, animations, activities, and games to teach all the essential information parents need to know to prepare for their birth. Cost: $40. To register please call 217-876-3400 or register online

Family Birth Center Tours

We encourage expectant parents who anticipate delivering at DMH to take a complimentary FREE tour of the labor and delivery area: see a birthing room, the nursery and postpartum area. Tours will be offered every other month at 7 pm. For more information, call 217-876-3400 or register online.

Infant CPR Class

FREE. Learn how to perform CPR on an infant, child & adult. For parents, babysitters, grandparents and caregivers. To register, call 217-876-3100 or register online.

New Brother/Sister Day Camp

Children ages three years to 10 years learn about new babies, what to expect when mom goes to the hospital and how to help at home. Children practice with a doll; please bring a doll or stuffed animal. This class is FREE and meets at 6:30 pm in the OB classroom. Registration required; call 217-876-3400 or or register online.

Safe Sitter Class

This one-session class teaches 11—13 year-old girls and boys how to handle emergencies and provide safe child care. Participants should bring a sack lunch. Drinks/snack provided. The class COSTS $30 and meets from 9 am—3 pm in the OB classroom. Registration required; call 217-876-3100 or register online.

InBeTWEEN for Girls

Girls, ages nine to 12 years, are invited (along with a parent) to learn more about the life issues that are important for teens to know: health, physical and emotional changes of puberty, the reproductive system, the importance of nutrition and exercise, caring for your body, coping with new feelings and relationships. The one-day class is held from 10—11:30 am in the OB classroom and is FREE of charge. Registration required; call 217-876-3100 or register online.

Expectant Grandparent

This FREE class covers newborn care, childproofing a home, toys for various ages and other new-grandparent
