Decatur Memorial Hospital utilizes the da Vinci Xi Surgical System – the most advanced robotic surgery option. The da Vinci Xi System was designed with the goal of further advancing the technology used in minimally invasive surgery. The System can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for multi-quadrant surgeries. DMH uses the state-of-the-art system in the areas of gynecology, urology, and colorectal surgery.
The da Vinci Xi System has broader capabilities than previous versions. First there was the “S,” then the “Si” and now the “Xi.” The Xi offers greater precision, vision and dexterity for our surgeons, which benefits our patients. It is greatly improved over previous da Vinci models. The Xi builds on the core technology of previous models, but is enhanced by allowing surgeons to train in simulation modules experiencing the unparalleled manipulation of the camera and instrumentation. It provides surgeons a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands into the patient. Unlike previous versions, the Xi does not require surgeons to stop and start, to dock and undock, it allows for constant movement, a great improvement.
DMH purchased the da Vinci “S” and did our first case in 2007. We then purchased the newer “Si” in 2012, but saw the need to upgrade to the vastly improved “Xi” version in 2017. It is fundamentally a quantum leap from the previous versions.

This da Vinci Xi System expands upon core da Vinci System features, including articulating instruments, 3D high definition (3D-HD) visualization, intuitive motion, and an ergonomic design. The surgeon is 100% in control of the robotic-assisted da Vinci System, which translates his/her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments.
The Xi System’s immersive 3D-HD vision system provides surgeons a highly magnified view, precision, dexterity and control. The da Vinci instruments have mechanical wrists that bend and rotate to mimic the movements of the human wrist.
