The New DMH Senior Behavioral Health Services Opens Oct. 1 on Hospital’s Sixth Floor
October 1, 2015…Decatur area older adults can now turn to Decatur Memorial Hospital (DMH) when they need hospitalized for behavioral health issues.
The DMH Senior Behavioral Health Services opens Oct. 1. The new 20-bed secure inpatient behavioral health nursing unit for seniors is located on the hospital’s sixth floor. DMH has partnered with Diamond Healthcare Corporation (Diamond) of Richmond, Va., to help manage the new senior behavioral health nursing unit.
The new newly remodeled 13,000 square foot nursing unit is designed specifically for adults ages 55 and over who are experiencing a wide range of emotional, social and behavioral issues that affects the healthy function of their daily lives. The DMH Senior Behavioral Health Services offers a secure healing environment for adults facing psychiatric or emotional issues requiring hospitalization for behavioral disturbances associated with mood disorders, dementia, severe depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, hallucinations and delusions.
“We look forward to being a bridge of support for older adults who need inpatient crisis behavioral stabilization,” said Timothy D. Stone Jr., President, Decatur Memorial Hospital. “As the aging population in Macon County continues to increase, DMH is positioned to offer advanced programming and services for the treatment of behavioral health illness for older adults.”
The DMH Senior Behavioral Health Services program is medically supervised by psychiatrist Choudary Kavuri, M.D., and is comprised of an experienced, professionally trained team of registered nurses, licensed clinical social workers, therapeutic recreational therapists and certified nurse assistants.
“Mental health disorders affect at least 17 percent of individuals age 55 or older and the risk of depression is four times greater than that of the general population,” Dr. Kavuri said. “Due to the presence of other medical conditions, depression and other mental disorders often go undiagnosed in older patients. The new DMH Senior Behavioral Health Services is customized specifically for older adults.”
Each patient receives an individualized assessment and treatment plan prepared by our multidisciplinary team of behavioral experts that creates a path to recovery including a discharge plan focusing on maintaining a healthy mind/body lifestyle. Our program assists seniors struggling with change transitions, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, stress, anger, problem solving, aging and disease management. These issues are addressed through individual, group and family therapy; coping and positive living skills; grief and loss resolution; medication management; communication and conflict resolution; stress management; assertiveness training; and health and wellness training. Referrals can be made by calling 217-876-6400. Treatment is covered by most insurance plans including Medicare.
